The U.S. national debt has crossed unprecedented levels, raising alarm across financial circles. Yet, paradoxically, the very foundation of global finance still rests upon the same system that sustains it — the power of the U.S. dollar.
Despite record deficits, the dollar remains the world’s reserve currency, used in over 80% of international trade and held by central banks as the ultimate store of value. This isn’t by coincidence; it’s by design. The U.S. Treasury market provides unmatched liquidity, deep credit confidence, and a perceived “safe haven” status that few alternatives can rival.
Each time global instability rises, capital flows toward the dollar — not away from it. Investors still price risk, oil, and debt in USD, reinforcing its dominance. Even as debt expands, the demand for dollar-denominated assets continues to outpace supply, sustaining the cycle.
But this power comes at a cost. As fiscal pressures grow, the U.S. must issue more debt to maintain its influence, effectively exporting inflation and absorbing global liquidity. Emerging markets feel the strain through capital flight and currency depreciation, deepening global economic asymmetry.
The world’s greatest irony is that the system questioning the dollar’s sustainability continues to rely on it for survival. Until an alternative with equal trust, scale, and convertibility emerges, the dollar’s supremacy will persist — debt and all.
